Samsung are recycling their old galaxy phones and repurposing them for use as medical devices. The scheme was started back in 2017, remember those gentler, less messed up times? The phones are mainly being used to help with diagnosis of eye problems, images of the eye are uploaded to the cloud where it is analysed and potential treatments are suggested. So far the scheme has been rolled out in India, Morocco, Vietnam and Papua New Guinea. The electronics company made a portable retina camera using old smartphones, and used it on over 19,000 residents in Vietnam, pretty f-ing sick (pun very much intended) if you don’t mind us saying. Also they have plans to adapt these phones for use in diagnosing cervical cancer. Hat’s off to you samsung.
